I Did Not Catch That At All, LOL.
It’s like we don’t even notice it, and when we do, it feels so irrelevant.
Happy Thursday y'all!
I was thinking about something interesting this week. Have you ever noticed how some marketing just doesn’t land? It’s like we don’t even notice it, and when we do, it feels so irrelevant. I got to thinking, what’s causing this? Why does some marketing feel so disconnected, even when it's personalized?
I explore this in my latest episode of The Marketing Woman Podcast, and I really want to break down some of the key points I shared with you

Now, let’s dive in!
The Danger of Over-Automation
We’re living in an age where AI and data drive a lot of marketing decisions, which is amazing (trust me, you know I LOVE data) But, when we rely too much on automation and data, we often lose the human connection. You’ve probably received an ad or an email that was "personalized" but completely missed the mark—like getting baby product ads when you don’t even have kids 😒. It’s a clear sign that while the data is there, the connection is not.
Authenticity Over Personalization
Personalization is one thing, but in a world that’s more connected than ever, people want to feel understood, not just targeted. Authenticity is about understanding values, emotions, and human experiences. I shared an example of how Patagonia, a brand I studied in my Master’s program, doesn’t just talk about sustainability—they live it. They align their values with their customers, and that’s where real connection happens.
Storytelling is Everything
A big theme I explored is how storytelling creates emotional bonds. It’s not about manipulating customers with fancy narratives; it’s about genuine stories that align with your brand’s values. I talked about how brands like Nike and Glossier don’t just sell products, they sell a message, a feeling. Their stories resonate because they stay true to who they are and what they believe in, which creates a lasting connection.
Scaling While Staying Authentic
Another interesting point we touched on is how brands can scale and grow without losing their authenticity. It’s easy to lose touch with your core message when you’re trying to cater to a bigger audience, talked about a big brand and how they embody this.
So, this is what’s been on my mind: Are we connecting with our audience on a human level, or are we just throwing data and trends at them? Data is amazing—it’s a powerful tool—but at the end of the day, it’s just that: a tool. It can’t replace the emotional connection that comes from telling a real, relatable story.
There’s a lot more to this conversation, and I’d love for you to listen to the full episode. I go even deeper into how brands can find that balance between data-driven marketing and real human connection. Give it a listen here and let me know what you think.
