Today's Focus: The Art of Follow-Through in Networking

Networking requires both practice and patience. I love doing coffee chats with my connections on Linkedin and I often find myself in random conversations where the topic inevitably turns to “networking”— how to build relationships, how to connect, reach out to them, and most importantly what mistakes not to make.

Let me get this one out of the way, as humans there is absolutely no guarantee that all relationships will work out, both professional and personal. Even if you try to avoid the mistakes, sometimes it is just not the right fit.

Now, let’s dive in!

In one of the earlier editions, I talked about networking and building relationships. But today, I want to talk about something important that is often overlooked: the follow-through.

I talked about it in my TikTok video yesterday as well:

Why Follow-Through Matters

It's not just a gesture when someone offers to help or takes the effort to schedule a meeting; it's an opportunity. But one mistake I see far too frequently is failing to follow through. You might be surprised to hear that a lot of people lose out on important opportunities just by failing to reply or go further.

From my own experiences, I’ve seen how easy it is to overlook that email or message, but the truth is, this simple act of follow-through can set you apart. It shows respect for the other person’s time and reinforces your commitment to building that relationship!

The Value of Taking That Meeting

Sometimes, people hesitate to follow up because they’re not sure if they need the help that’s being offered. I’ve learned that even when you think you already know the solution, taking that meeting might give you new perspectives or ideas that you hadn’t considered before.

I Get That Life Happens— So, How Can We Remember?

  1. Set Reminders: Make it a habit to set reminders for follow-ups. Whether it’s a calendar alert or a quick note, staying on top of your networking commitments is key.

  2. Express Gratitude: Always thank the person for their time and advice, whether you decide to take the next steps or not. It leaves a positive impression.

  3. Be Clear About Your Needs: If you realize you don’t need the help, be transparent. It’s better to be upfront than to leave someone hanging.

The follow-through is what transforms a casual connection into a meaningful relationship :)
