How's your mid-week going?
Today's Focus: Personal Branding
Ah, it’s almost the weekend!
No light and breezy, jumping straight to advanced strategies!
Many people talk about personal branding and the “we all know it” points like “Be Authentic,” “Be Consistent,” and “Support Others.” I know I have talked about these many times; in fact, I’ve used these exact words on various platforms. However, I think we need to focus on one thing beyond all:
Doing the thing.
I can give you a million different ways to show up online and build your brand, what you should talk about, how you should talk about it, the tools I use, and the methods I follow—all important points, yet they mean nothing if we don't implement them. I think this will help:
Why do you want to build your personal brand?
To get a better job?
To network?
To showcase how skilled you are at something?
To stand out in a pile of job applications?
Here’s why you should build it!
It would help if you built a brand online to show who you are, why you are showing up, what that “showing up” means to you, what you are trying to do, how you are trying to do it, how others play a role in that, and along the way, how you can help another person.
Really think about it: What does any of this mean if it doesn't come naturally to you? Building your personal brand should feel authentic, not like something you have to force.
Take a look at these two scenarios:
Scenario 1:
"Hey! I am super stoked to announce I completed this certification on this course taught by X. In a world where this ✨ topic ✨ is so important, we must stay ahead of the curve” (that course was made in 2019).
I am not saying the above to make fun of anyone—I have posted stuff like that too. However, think about it this way:
Scenario 2:
"Hey everyone, I've been diving into this fascinating ✨topic✨ and was wondering if any of you had any updated resources to share. I recently completed a great course by ✨tag instructor✨, and it was incredibly insightful. I'm eager to explore this subject further and would love your recommendations for more current materials or perspectives."
How does that sound?
I am honestly asking you.
Stop sounding LinkedIn-ish. If I ran into you on the street tomorrow, would you say, “Hello there, glad to connect, your network looks impressive”?
Or would you say, “Hey nice meeting you, I noticed you’re interested in X Y Z, and here are my thoughts on the subject. What do you think?”
We’ve more to cover on this topic- but I respect your time.
Until Sunday,
Anusha Kannan
